As the MOBL heads into the crucial months of August and September, it looks as if we only have one divisional race to keep an eye on. As has been the case every year in the MOBL, the ML North race is tight and should come down to the last week of the season. The trading deadline brought a few deals but it doesn’t look as if any of the trades will have an effect on any of the divisional races this year. The biggest deal saw

send star LF Elroy Graves to Ann Arbor for RHP George Price. The Dems were in desperate need of some offense and with the maturation of LHP Roberto Serrano (11-7, 2.04 ERA) into one of the best pitchers in the ML, Price became expendable. “I really like this deal for both teams. Ann Arbor really needed another bat, especially with how disappointing CF Harry St. John (.201, 8 HR, 39 RBI, 21 SB’s) has been. And Price will really help take the pressure off [Carlton] Wunderlich and [Amor] Rainez,” one ML scout said. Youngstown picked up a couple of good, but not great, starting pitchers when they added RHP John Reinheart from Akron and LHP Clark Josephson from Traverse City. Josephson is a very nice pickup as the Black Irons sent 1941 1st round pick, C Jordy Sankey, to the Cherries. Traverse City, meanwhile, is stockpiling some of the best young talent in the MOBL and will be a force in a few years in the ML. Akron received LF Eric Minahan, who hit 45 HR and had 112 RBI’s for the Black Irons last year, but has struggled mightily this year (.229, 9 HR, 31 RBI). They hope a change of scenery wakes him up.

Even though Grand Rapids had a slightly better month of July, I had to give the Michigan League Team of the Month award to the Mackinac Trolleys, who went 15-9 in July and jumped into a 3 game lead in the ML North. “That team looks like they are really starting to come together. They are a real solid team in all facets and know how to win the close games (20-11 record this year in one run games). They’ve got some top notch starting pitching too,” Lansing manager Bobby Jedburgh said after his team was swept in a 4-game series by Mackinac in mid-July. RHP Timothy Hart (11-4, 1.83 ERA) continues to look like the top young pitcher (along with Kalamazoo LHP Willard Nasmyth) in the ML. LHP Zachariah LaFlamme (11-9, 2.67 ERA) and RHP David Massiter (3-1, 4.45 ERA in July) both look like excellent support for the supremely talented Hart. Closer RHP Roald Plume has been fantastic in the pen as well as he has converted 33 of 34 save opportunities this year with a 2.20 ERA. The offense took a hit when they shipped CF Jon Koepke to Grand Rapids, but SS Phil High (.257, 2 HR, 17 RBI in 34 games since joining the Trolleys) has been an excellent addition to this “smallball” offense. C Boswell Seppings (.309, 7 HR, 38 RBI) is now the premiere offensive talent in this lineup even though he is still just a rookie.

After going an impressive 18-9 record in July, the Columbus Archers have a glimmer of hope in the OL West and are named the Ohio League Team of the Month. This Archer team has been lead by the resurgence of veteran CF Jake ‘Jitters’ Richards (.321, 37 HR, 95 RBI), as he leads the entire MOBL in HR and is 2nd in RBI’s. “Jake has been incredible this year and has simply been the straw that stirs the drink in our clubhouse,” Columbus’ GM Ricky Stagg said. One player he has taken under his wing is super prospect 3B Dave Waterman (.262, 21 HR, 67 RBI), who is a shoo-in for OL Rookie of the Year if he continues this up. LF Bip Stuck (.308, 11 HR, 43 RBI) has been an excellent find for Stagg, after acquiring him from Sault Ste. Marie in the Jim Trent trade. Looking at how well the Archer offense has performed, it’s a wonder this team doesn’t have a better record, but the pitching as certainly been a disappointment. LHP Roberto Pagan (11-4, 1.89 ERA) has been fantastic, but RHP Tony ‘Wall’ Navarro (6-7, 4.90 ERA) and LHP Cole Brunson (2-6, 6.88 ERA) have been subpar. The biggest problem they seem to have is that the staff just simply walks too many batters (worst in the OL in walks allowed) and it’s gotten them in trouble all year. Super prospect RHP Bill ‘Lumberjack’ Herr was called up for good in early June and has done well thus far (4-4, 4.43 ERA). They probably won’t catch Dayton but could very well finish with a .550 winning percentage this year.

Michigan League MOB Top Candidates
C Benjamin Landers – Kalamazoo Bells - .357, .433 OBP, 7 HR, 36 RBI, 44 Runs, 21 Doubles, 2 Triples, 2 SB’s
CF Jon Koepke – Grand Rapids Blue Lakers - .296, .351 OBP, 21 HR, 65 RBI, 59 Runs, 23 Doubles, 2 Triples, 3 SB’s
LF Vernon Wareham – Sault Ste. Marie White Lakers - .310, .399 OBP, 22 HR, 65 RBI, 63 Runs, 24 Doubles, 3 Triples, 22 SB’s
Landers’ chances were certainly hurt when he went on the 15-day DL in July, but Vernon Wareham appears to be on a mission this year (2 BOM awards already). If Koepke can stay as hot as he has been since arriving in Grand Rapids (.338, 6 HR, 26 RBI in 34 games with G.R.), he can steal it away as well.

Michigan League MOP Top Candidates
LHP Roberto Serrano – Ann Arbor Democrats – 11-7, 2.04 ERA, 133 K’s, 1.09 WHIP, 180.2 IP
RHP Timothy Hart – Mackinac Trolleys – 11-4, 1.83 ERA, 136 K’s, 0.89 WHIP, 162.1 IP
LHP Joe O’Crouley – Lansing Capitals – 13-4, 1.72 ERA, 102 K’s, 1.06 WHIP, 167.2 IP
Both O’Crouley and Hart started the season on fire and regressed a little in July, allowing Serrano (who was phenomenal in both June and July) to jump right into this tight race. If Hart can lead his team to a division title, will that get him some “bonus” votes?

Ohio League MOB Top Candidates
SS Tony Tiner – Toledo Admirals - .346, .502 OBP (unreal!!), 25 HR, 73 RBI, 81 Runs, 17 Doubles, 1 Triple
CF Jake Richards – Columbus Archers - .321, .369 OBP, 37 HR, 95 RBI, 80 Runs, 26 Doubles, 3 Triples, 6 SB’s
1B Jesus BadillaZanesville Engineers - .302, .375 OBP, 25 HR, 60 RBI, 61 Runs, 31 Doubles, 4 Triples
Ohio League fans sure are treated to amazing individual offensive performances each year. In 1940, it was Canton LF Peter Northcutt. In 1941, it was Dayton CF Greg Bleasdale. And this year, SS Tony Tiner is demolishing Ohio League pitching and is a huge favorite for this year’s MOB.

Ohio League MOP Top Candidates
RHP Josh MacCord – Canton Terriers – 16-1, 1.74 ERA, 179 K’s, 0.94 WHIP, 140 IP
LHP Howard West – Canton Terriers – 11-3, 1.86 ERA, 181 K’s, 0.93 WHIP, 169 IP
LHP Gurkan Tiffany – Dayton Pilots – 12-2, 1.52 ERA, 164 K’s, 0.90 WHIP, 142 IP
MacCord seems to be the favorite, but there are plenty of excellent players that could steal it away from the Terrier flamethrower. Plenty of analysts are salivating at the thought of another Dayton-Canton OL Championship as 5 of the top 7 pitchers in the OL are from those two teams.

Michigan League Batter of the Month - LF Kev Taylor, Grand Rapids Blue Lakers - .337, .396 OBP, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 21 Runs (4th BOM of his career)

Michigan League Pitcher of the Month - RHP Alvar 'Roach' Sanchez, Lansing Capitals - 5-2, 1.69 ERA, 49 K's, 53.1 IP

Ohio League Batter of the Month - SS Tony 'Ducky' Tiner, Toledo Admirals - .373, 8 HR, 16 RBI, 23 Runs (4th BOM of his career)

Ohio League Pitcher of the Month - LHP Gurkan Tiffany, Dayton Pilots - 4-1, 1.62 ERA, 47 K's, 39 IP (2nd POM of his career)
