I booked a room at a hotel near Fenway (might have been HoJo on Kenmore Drive) and arrived just after a match had finished and wondered what was going on. I asked at the hotel and they said it was a baseball match. I had always been of the view that it was a glorified form of rounders because we never got much exposure to it over this side of the Atlantic and decided that I'd see if I could get a ticket for the following day which I did. Because I can't remember the dates, I can't remember who they were playing because my knowledge of it was zero.
It was a really good game and it was that that got me into following the sport and because it was at Fenway the team I decided to choose to follow was the Red Sox. It took a couple of years to really get into the whole thing and knowing all the intricacies, but it's always one of the first things I check on in the morning if it's a 7:05ET start.
The Yankees suffer the same problem as Burberry do in the UK. The youngsters who are just out of control tend to wear Burberry or Burberry style clothes and more often than not a Yankees baseball cap, and they have no idea what it means.
The name came from the fact that I used to live closer to Oxford (and I went to university there), and I thought that on a mainly US forum like here that I'd choose the nearest well known geographical settlement, and it also starts OX which was handy.
When we went on our honeymoon cruise, most of the people on board were from the US and they had all sorts of quizzes throughout the two weeks. I ended up with a better record on the baseball questions than many of them (and I was the only one to answer this question correctly : Name the three MLB teams whose name does not end in S? which I thought was fairly basic)
