EBU Championship

EBU Title Fight @ Forum, Russia

Champion Vitali Klitschko, Ukraine 14-2-0 (13) vs. #16 Max Schmeling, Germany 20-4-1 (18)

Both fighters come into the ring confident and in excellent shape. The champion doesn’t land any significant punches in round one and may be a little rusty from the six month layoff. Schmeling is beating the champ to the punch and is effortlessly moving around the ring after landing blows to both the body and head. Schmeling takes the 1st two rounds. Vitali finally lets his hands go and we have a slugfest in round 4. The challenger still lands more consistently and the champ seems to be a little wobbly at the end of the round. Klitschko lands a nice cross and has a nice round even though Schmeling tries to rally in the last ten seconds to steal round five. Max lands punch after punch with no response from the defending champ. Round 6 to Schmeiling. Vitali is hurt in round 7 and has swelling to his right eye. We have the challenger winning by a decent margin right now and Max doesn’t seem to be getting tired. Vitali’s punches don’t seem to have any steam on them as we enter the 10th. Schmeling lands a hard three punch combo and drops the champ at the 1:00 mark of the 10th. Klitschko is hurt and in bad shape. The ref is closely watching. Down goes Klitschko for the 2nd time after a perfect uppercut. The champ gets up at the count of 3 but is unable to respond to Referee Santiago. The fight has been stopped. Winner and new EBU Champion is Max Schmeling by (TKO10). Schmeling lands 50.6% to 28.9%. Cards at time of stoppage 88-84, 88-84, 87-85 all for Schmeling.
