I'd heard it said that Walter Johnson didn't pitch inside for fear of injuring the opposing batters. He had good control for a hard thrower and still leads the all-time list in hit batters. Doesn't seem that notion of gentlemanliness, in this particular instance, really jibes with the numbers.
