One thing that works if you're looking to "spice things up" with your logos is simply to do some bevelling on them.
What worked for me is to make the outer ring its own layer, and then bevel the outside of that. In Photoshop, you can do a "Color Overlay" layer style on it as well, which allows you to very easily and quickly change the color of it (I don't know what the equivalent is in The Gimp). Doing the same to the logo itself usually works well, and I also "downward" embossed the text.
