03.03.1969 – Royals Trade Oliver to Twins for Cardenas
Trade between Kansas City and Minnesota
Royals get:
SS Leo Cardenas
Twins get:
1B Bob Oliver
Since the Royals are an expansion team, it’s hard to have mixed feelings about this trade, but that’s exactly what I have. I think Oliver could have had a solid future in KC, but the Royals management decided to trade him for Leo Cardenas, who looks a lot like their current SS, Jackie Hernandez. Basically, the only difference is Cardenas ability to turn the DP and Hernandez is slightly faster. Otherwise, they’re the same player.
ST Game 2 vs Baltimore Orioles L 4-1 LP-Bill Butler (0-1)
SP – BAL-Dave McNally KC-Bill Butler
An early 3 spot for the Orioles was more than enough to defeat the Royals in their second ST game. Baltimore’s pitchers held the KC offense to a meager 3 hits, two of which were in the fourth when back to back singles by Mike Fiore and the newly acquired Leo Cardenas scored KC’s only run of the game. Good news for the pitching staff as Dave Wickersham, Galen Cisco and Steve Jones held the O’s to 1 run and 1 hit over the last 5 innings
