Historical Players Underperforming

So I'm pretty new to the whole historical sim thing. I've started one back from 1901, running the Pirates. My only major concern is that certain historical players are seriously underperforming. Notably Honus Wagner. The first two seasons he his .333 and then .294. In '03, he's hitting all of .230. His real life numbers for those seasons were .353, .330, and .355. Pretty notable drop. I can't figure out why. I've tried moving him around in the batting order, tried adjusting his individual settings, but nothing seems to do much. He just isn't hitting all that well. I'm not sure its anything to do with my game settings - I have it set to recalculate on 3 years, and most of the bigger players are hitting well - Lajoie, Delahanty, etc. Wondering if anyone else has run into something like this. Is it just Wagner or is there something I could try to get him hitting?

The other slightly odd thing I've noticed is that a historical player who doesn't seem to stand out in any major way - Roy Thomas of the Philles - has hit over .400 the first two years and is doing so again. He hit .309, .286, and .327 in 01-03 in reality but he's the top player in the game and his attributes don't really show why.
