I'm done
I finally broke down and purchased the game becuase it looked like 2007 rosters might actually be happening. How wonderful to find that the game's design still makes an arduous chore of importing and accurately designing a real-world-based universe. I took the positive feedback on these boards and apparent progress on rosters as a sign that things had changed, that the game was more accessible to people who like to jump into a simulation that closely mirrors the real baseball world.
I even tried creating my own rosters this time. Alas, importing player names and history feels more like joining a trigonometry study group. Customizing player contracts and service times to reflect realistic paradigms? I'd have better luck convincing Tony Soprano not to whack anyone this season. Creating realistic rosters with realistic players is once again a near-impossible task. I got hopeful when a trusted roster maker popped up, but even he has been felled by injury (!) trying to set this game up the way a good number of players want it. I know there were no promises of real rosters, etc., etc. But if Sports Interactive's sales figures are indeed as disappointing as rumored, I would point the finger first at a failure to design a simple, even moderately challenging way to import an existing statistical universe into the game.
Of course, if there are more fools like me out there who bought the game on a basis of trust, Sports Interactive will be just fine. I congratulate this game's marketing team. Despite snarky attitudes and poor business accumen, particularly when responding to a number of posts voicing concerns similar to my own, they managed to keep my hopes up that the game really had improved and was really more playable for the average gamer. And while I could have sensed the aforementioned deficencies by spending quality time with a demo, I jumped the gun.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
So long, OOTP.
