April Round-Up

Gushiken In Tough Battle

Hokkaido, Japan: Asian Federation and Japanese Jr. Flyweight champion Yoko Gushiken stepped into deeper water to face veteran Asian and Pacific champ Hwan-Jin Kim (35-7-2). Gushiken stabbed Kim's sides often in the first and snapped his jab in the champion's face repeatedly as he claimed the first and second rounds with relative ease. Kim moved to the outside for the third. The crafty veteran worked the angles and picked off Gushiken's jabs as he regained control of the bout and placed the next three rounds on his side of the ledger. The sixth frame was rather even until a stinging jab from Gushiken opened a deep cut over Kim's right eye. Billy Mascott worked feverishly in the corner to get the blood under control but Kim was clearly in trouble. Kim took the seventh round despite covering his wound only to have it re-opened in the eighth. Referee Ian John Lewis halted the action briefly to have the doc take a look. The fight went on but Kim was gushing blood by round's end. Mascott again worked some magic between rounds but it simply wasn't enough. Gushiken ripped open the cut again in the ninth and began to score at will as Kim struggled to see through the blood. At 1:38 of the ninth with the fighters even on his card, referee Lewis stepped in and declared Gushiken the winner via technical knockout. The victory crowned Gushiken as the new APBC champ and improved his spotless record to 17(15)-0-0.
