If I may jump in here...
I have a similar crash when trying to quit the game... For me the progress bar gets to "Closing Database ... 94%" hangs for a bit and I get a Windows pop-up message "OOTP2007.exe has encountered a problem and must shut down" ... I've just been saving right before I quit and it has not harmed my universe (that I can tell)
This has happened to me before the patch and after installing the patch, and with multiple universes. It does not seem to happen if I only sim a day or two at a time, but longer than that and I get the crash during quit. (I don't recall for a fact, but it seems to happen if I sim through the end of a year into the next)
