the higher resolution is better for most people, since you can have more information on the screen. Depending on the screen size though, the text might be a little harder to read on at the higher res.

As for your running at 1440, it depends if your video card supports that res (both the monitor and video card need to support the res). If it doesn't, then you are probably out of luck. Do you have the latest video drivers for your card installed?
