I've got it logged as a bug already. Your explanation makes sense, but I didn't know if OOTP would have such a shift. If it does and the play was okay in that sense, it's even more necessary to have the defensive positioning told on the screen somewhere (although it should be anyhow) just because without it the play looks really bad.
We've had plays like this before, ball hit to the catcher that the pitcher fields, balls hit to the pitcher that the 2B fields... all have been fixed. This shouldn't be any problem to get fixed... it just hid better.
