You have it right. They're there for immersion more than anything else at this point. Next version, they should be part of the progression, where a player will graduate from high school to college to low level minors or American Legion ball or whatever (I hope, I hope, I hope).
For me, the way they are now, it's just eye candy and extra work. YMMV
