I've used Middle Relievers in the closer position and have been actually quite successful. I don't really think there is a distinct disadvantage. However, the one problem is the "value" of the player according to the computer GMs. Computer GMs tend to value those players with the "CL" designation more, than players with the "MR" designation. Furthermore, there tends to be more "CL" players with dominating ratings than "MR" players.
I'd like to hear from the developers about this. Does the "CL" (Closer) designation (compared to a "MR" (Middle Reliever) designation) make any difference in the game? I don't think that the computer GMs should put more value towards "CL" players over "MR" players if it has no effect in save situations. Shouldn't trades value all depend on ratings and age?
