Here's a little inside on why he ever even got to play in the majors. Essentially the Mets where a building team (Just 2 years old) and had a thin minors and where afraid of losing any players who even remotely had a chance of playing in the majors. Out of fear of losing players like him due to the rules of the period they had to carry him on their 25 man roster or lose him.
