#16 Deacon "Holy Man" Deaton, Starting Pitcher, 23 yrs, Philadelphia (A)

Drafted in 2nd round, 29th overall pick, by Philadelphia (A) in 1916...
The orphaned son of an Amish father and an Italian mom, Deacon was raised by an uncle (who has since been commited to a state mental institution in Louisiana). Needless to say Deaconlooked ofr and found solace in the Southern Baptist Church.
Deacon spent 1916 in A ball starting 17 games goin 8-4 with a 2.71 ERA. But a funny thing happened in 1917 and the Athletics obviously forgot about him as a future major leaguer as he was used as a reliever getting in only 15 games and a measly 18 IP. He had a sub 2.00 ERA and obviously has "pissed" off Philly management as he deserves at least a shot at AA if not AAA as a starter.
