Good card starts off December
December 1, 1911
HW - In October of 1910, Sam Langford (31-6-2) made his first defense of the title and had to settle for a draw, this time he left no doubt with a TKO9 win over Peter Jackson (2/2) (37-8-2). This was only for the WBA title belt and it was Langford's 5th defense of it.
It was a close fight with a lot of rounds that could've gone either way. So it looked as though we were headed for another draw. Langford dropped Jackson early in the 9th, cut him over his right eye, then dropped him again. He made it to his feet but after a couple of more seconds, the ref stopped it.
I had Langford up 78-74 at the stoppage.
Other fights
HW - John L. Sullivan (28/20) (39-9) continued his mastery of James Jeffries (15/23) (42-12) with a UD10. It was the third time Sullivan has beaten Jeffries.
Sullivan won 6 of the first 7 rounds then held onto win the fight as Jeffries came storming back and even knocked John L. down in the 10th. I had it 95-94 , the official judges had it 97-92??/96-93/96-93.
WW - Billy Smith (25/17) (21-5-1) scored a UD10 over Bartley Connolly (10/12) (20-4-2) yet some how didn't move ahead of him in the rankings.
Connolly almost won the fight early, knocking Smith down in the first and then scoring 30 on him in the second. Smith then settled down and won the rest of the rounds. I had it 97-91, the official judges had it 98-90/95-94/96-92. A little unsure of the 98-90 score considering he scored the first round 10-8 and the second in favor of Smith despite Smith being outscored 30-12.
BW - Owen Moran (11/10) (33-7-6) DQ3 Joe Bertrand (29/34) (16-5-3) (Bertrand at pre)
HW - Nick Burley (58/37) (21-11-1) KO6 Frank Slavin (32/48) (29-17-1)
WW - Al Neill (27/22) (11-11-4) Tech9 Charles Gleason (33/40) (15-4) (Gleason at pre)
