Given I was still a passionate United fan back then and practically had a heart attack at that moment it is indelibly etched on my memory. Gordon Smith was the generous striker.

It is a shame the replay was such a damp squib and it did take the edge off winning the cup a wee bit. 3-0 up at halftime and the season was done. The second half was a bit pointless and I think everyone would have been happy to call it a match at the break and let us have a party and still get home at a reasonable hour. Thursday night replays were never ideal... I still don’t know why they didn’t just push it back the whole week to the next Saturday. Then again it did mean we won it on Sir Matt’s birthday, and it is a damn sight better than a shoot-out so it wasn’t all bad.

Boilermaker, regarding the song; You’ll Never Walk Alone was a classic football song that all clubs used to sing for quite a long time. It only started to drop out of circulation and become seen as an exclusively Liverpool/Celtic song fairly recently, although I can’t pin down when. Possibly it was post-Heysel when we all shunned everything Scouse for a while, but I feel it was already beginning to fall out of fashion elsewhere in the late 70s.
