I’m sorry, but that is pure chip on shoulder, smaller club paranoia. Let me battle with my memory and try and think way back in the depths of time to pluck a bit of evidence... how about three weeks ago? Sheffield United signed Jon Stead and he scored his first goal for the club in the last game. He has also played half a dozen games for Sunderland this season and a score or so for Derby. Small EPL club wants to sign him, three teams, and all of them were actually in this season to boot. If you want further evidence I’ll just wave the semi-pro dispensation in your face
It is a non-story. The rule didn’t apply to loans when it was written; the purpose was to prevent players abusing the new freedom of movement post Bosman II. Mascherano’s status as merely loaned to West Ham meant the rule was never really applicable to him, and as far as I’m aware Liverpool are not actually buying his rights either. The FIFA rule is rather moot, but has just been jumped on by various hacks
because Liverpool are a big club. I’d imagine the problems are arising because the EPL are somewhat discomforted by the players rights not being owned by a club.
