RAM is the key thing to make larger league universes or longer term sims run faster. I have 1 GB of ram and a P3 1GHz processor which runs the game acceptably fast. I can't give you exact numbers on how much difference you'll see in terms of upping your system, but more RAM certainly helps.
It's important to note that there are a number of in-game factors that affect how fast the game sims:
1. How many leagues/teams do you have?
2. What are the stats level for each league?
3. Are you generating HTML or CSV exports on a regular basis?
The first two of these greatly impact the sim speed and the amount of memory required to run it. You can run a very basic league with low stats level rather comfortably on a fairly out of date machine. If you want to model all colleges feeding into MLB with full 5-tier minors, Japanese leagues, and more all on very high stats detail, you'll need a much beefier machine.
