Also to add to what you said, I don't think many top teams use an actual 4-2-4 nowadays. It's just not beneficial.
You might see a modified version, which employs two wingers who drop back when the opposition have possession into a 4-4-2, and then when the team have possession can get into forward roles and therefore becoming 4-2-4 for a short period of time.
If you play with just two midfielders, you're basically giving up the midfield to the opposition. The only time you will see an actual 4-2-4 is when a team is searching for a goal(s) late in the game. And even then a lot of teams will actually play 4-3-3 so you can try and regain possession easier if you lose it in the attacking third.
