I don't see how they gave up a bunch. Two single A pitchers who aren't really on anyone's radar at this point and a AAA pitcher who's one year removed from arm surgery and nowhere near any top 100 prospect list.
Even if Sheffield plays at a level worse than the average of his past 4-5 seasons (and I don't really see why he would), the Tigers would still be getting a .285/.380/.510 hitter for the middle of their lineup. Even if he's just a DH, adding in those numbers plus 30+ HRs and 100+ RBI is exactly what Detroit was missing against St. Louis.
I think prospects are becoming way too valuable now-days if getting a bonafied .900+ OPS slugger is not worth a couple guys that (odds are) will never see the majors and a decent pitching prospect probably best suited for relief.
