In reality it hasn’t gone wrong at all. That one season was the typical aberration you often get when sides get promoted into a new division. You have a club full of confidence after the previous seasons success, with the winning habit well entrenched. A lot of clubs dramatically overachieve initially when they have momentum behind them, and then in following seasons they return to their natural level. Take that first season out the equation and Leigh were never competitive in the Conference, with a best finish of sixth from bottom. Not getting relegated despite finishing in the drop-zone for two years didn’t help them either. They’ve become firmly entrenched in the losing habit after three straight years in the bottom two.

By-the-by even their promotion seasons were dramatically out of character. Take that five year burst out the equation that saw them get two promotions and fifth in the Conference and you have to go back to 1985 to find them finishing in the top half of their division, and the 1960s to find them being regularly competitive.

Or am I wrong then?
Nope, not wrong at all, if anything you are over-estimating. They're not getting anything like that sort of average now they don‘t get the figures boosted by visits of big Conference clubs. This season they are not even averaging 200, only getting over that figure for the visits of Kettering and Scarborough (251 and 215 respectively).
