It's a more precise version of the depth chart, essentially. Instead of simply saying "start my backup LFer every third game" you get to specify exactly which games he should start in, allowing you to optimize your matchups to a greater degree.

Exactly. And when you do rest your cleanup hitter, it doesn't mean that your scrub has to bat cleanup.
