To play out the games you have to go to the Scores screen and select to Play from there. There is not an option from your team page to do this.
To get notices about your players click on Manager and view your Manager HomePage. You'll see options for a password, whether the CPU or you should make roster changes, and when you want to receive personal messages and news from your league.
Outside of that, 1998 basically has the rest of it down for you.
