Here's one with the text straight across, like the one in you posted. When I make something smaller, sometimes, it tends to start looking a tad blurry. What I use...in photoshop...is "smart sharpen." I have it set at 10 percent, so it sharpens it up a little bit at a time and then I have more control over how many times I click it, to get what I want to show a little more clearly. Maybe GIMP has something along those lines.

Edges to things can turn out like crap, sometimes. Using outer glow or inner glow and changing the glow color, to the outer line color, you can sometimes cheat the system to get a more defined line. Hope some of this helps.
