I definitely plan on using financials because I like the way it works, and besides before the reserve clause of 1879, contracts didn't really mean anything and players would defect from one team to another pretty much anytime they wanted.
I also want this league to be more stable than the National Association was at the time. No teams will fold, but I will come up with relocation rules for when an owner wants to move a team.

I agree with this and do not want to see it happen, so there will also be naming convention rules that will need to be followed. I may even just have a list of Team Markets for owners to choose from.
The stadiums will have limits on them as far as size goes. Even though this part of it will be fictional, I want to try to keep things consistent with the technology of the time. So there won't be any domes or turfed ballparks in the 1800's, and also there will be a limit to dimensions as well.
I am still in the very early stages of planning this and am always open to suggestions. Again, the one thing I will not change my mind about is having Financials turned on.
