That's true for
current-day minor leagues. In earlier times, it was different, and players could make a living playing only in minor league ball. Also, there were a good number of major league players who, when no longer wanted at the major league level, went down to the minors and played several more years there before finally retiring for good.
I don't want to see the ability to mimic the earlier eras of the minor leagues sacrificed to solve issues with current-day minor leagues. I'd much rather have the ability to recreate both kinds.
