Cataloged fielding errors
I have cataloged 48 games that produced 363 fielding errors. To get this kind of output you need to set all the fielding ratings of all the players to zero.
This is what I have come accross so far:
I have 49 instances where a player is charged with an extra plate appearance. All of these are tied directly to a fielding error.
19 errors on bunts
9 throwing errors on steal attempts
21 throwing errors on hits or outs
All errors from bunts or throwing errors will cause the batter to be charged with 2 plate appearances. The only case that a throwing error did not cause 2 plate appearances is on a pickoff.
Here are more anomolies in the log or between the log and the box score.
"Error in OF, En", n is any position
The log will not show a hit for the batter but the inning summary and the box score will show the hit. The position that is charged with the error varies from the log to the box score. Outfielders are always charged with the error in the box score. The outfielder errors are recorded correctly in both the log and box. So if the log is showing E3 the box would be E9, but if the log is E9 the box would be E9.
"Error on foul ball, En", n is any position
I have yet to see the log and the box score agree as to who actually made the error. Occasionally "Error on foul ball, E0" will show up in the log.
"Error receiving a throw, En", n is any infield position
The log shows who threw the ball the box score shows who actually made the error tying to catch the ball.
"Pickoff Throw to First - Error!"
Only throwing error not to cause 2 plate appreances for batter. What does happen is that there is no indication of who the error is charged to, should it be E1 on the the throw or E3 trying to catch it. Also, this error does not show up in the inning summary in the log. It does show up in the box score. I have only come across 1 of these so far and that was charged to the pitcher which would mean that it was a throwing error.
"Reached on error, E115S)"
This will show up every once in a while on sacrifice bunts. I am guessing the log should read "Reached on error, E1 (Groundball, 15S)". This will cause the 2 plate appearance issue since it is a bunt.
