I want the trading block back too, I really liked it a lot. But "hours and hours"? It really doesn't have to be as tedious as you suggest.
I use the short list a lot. Every time a player pops up on my screen that that I think I might want (now or in the future) I shortlist him. This process takes no time at all.
When I decide to unload a guy, I go straight to my shortlist, find who I want and reasonable think I could get, and offer a one for one deal with the team.
Response comes back, if its accepted I got to the team's homepage and scout them further to see if there are any other players I might be able to swindle out of the deal, add and repeat. This is exactly the same thing I did in 6.5 ith the tradeblock, take the AIs intial offer, scout there team, see if I could get some more.
If the response is a NO, I look at what the AI is asking for in addition to the guy I wanted to trade. If its more than I want to give I go back to the shortlist and move on to the next teir down. Maybe that is what is saving me time. I don't try to trade for a 5 star guy (I miss the stars too) get priced out or straight rejected, and then go to the next 5 star guy. If my favorite superstar is going to cost me too much I assume that my second favorite superstar is going to cost me too much, so I move down to my favorite All-Star, then solid starter, and so on. The whole thing really doens't take that much time. I think that trading block allowed you to see players that maybe you weren't thinking about who are available. Instead, unless it comes back, you have to spend some forethought thinking about what players you want to get if they become available. But time wise its pretty much a wash (assuming you have a good running shortlist).
One curious thing that can maybe help you out ... I've found that it takes me significantly more time to trade players during the winter meetings and at the deadline ... when teams give you immediate "yes/no" responses, but they don't give you an indcation of "what it would take to make this work." Those are the times when you really feel like you have to go player by player to find some magic combination. I therefore try to only target at most 1 particular guy during those peirods of the season. If I can't get that guy, I just move on.
I hope this helps. I really think the trading block is great, but not essential to making timely manuevers
