The game is quite large and of course takes up a lot of resources. A typical league contains MANY folders and MANY files.
The problem is really in the way that windows handles deleting files. If you ever open up a folder in Windows that has 10,000 files in it and hit CONTROL A to select every file, then hit the DELETE key, you will notice that it takes a very long time until it comes up and says "ARE YOU SURE... ". Then it will take quite a while to delete the files. Even longer if you have your recycle bin on, as it actually has to move the files to it.
Now, when you do it with the games function, you will have far less resources available, so it will take even longer to delete it.
I suggest that you use Windows Explorer to delete the files. It will be quicker and safer.
As far as getting an error when deleting files, of course do not try to delete them when you have the league open in OOTP.
A couple other reasons why a file cannot be deleted are:
1. Windows was doing some indexing or another program was, like Picasso, or Google, or any other search programs you have. Even a program like Windows Media Player, or Music Match could have been running in the background and was currently looking at the file when you tried to delete it.
2. Spyware or viruses could also be looking at the file.
3. If you have the folder view set as show thumbnails, or even as details, windows could have been creating the thumbnail or even looking at the file to get the detailed information.
Usually a second attempt to delete it will work, or a reboot of the computer will work, or worse case scenario is to boot into safe mode.
There are other reasons that a file could not be deleted, such as the NTFS entry has been corrupted. Maybe the owner or creator of the file has been messed up. (disk error). Hijackthis has an option to delete a file on reboot that works rather nicely in these rare situations.
Hope this helps you.
