What I tell everyone who makes a thread like this is that this is one of the most customizable games you will ever find. Pretty much everything can be edited. In response to your question, even if the game isn't producing the stats you want (although with the default setting it should look pretty good), you can tune it to your liking. The best part about the game is that it won't get old because the customization gives you unlimited possibilities and ways to play.

Also, in your case I think that OOTP2006 would be perfect for your situation. Most of the people who haven't been big on the game are people that have been playing the OOTP series for a while, and knowing where to click / what to do in pretty much any situation is second nature (I'm one of them). I think it's a lot harder to re-learn the interface after playing the old versions than it is to learn the interface for the first time.
