This World Cup, at a current goal per game average of 2.35, is the second lowest in the history of the competition. The lowest was Italia 90 at 2.21, and it is far behind the third lowest, Korea/Japan 2002 at 2.52.
However if we use the knockout round games to date to project the final total, there will only be a further 13 goals in the final 6.5 games, therefore giving a total of 148 for a final average of just 2.31 goals per game.

There have been a few more amazing goals from long range than usual..without that ball it would be even worse. I still contend that the excess reds have changed the face of games causing teams to shutdown
