Tampa Bay Devil Rays 34 41 .453 12.0 37-38
Baltimore Orioles 30 45 .400 16.0 31-44
Team Spotlight: New York Yankees
- Currently tied for the AL Wildcard, and only 2 games out in the East, the Yanks offense has powered them so far this year. Led by the leagues best contact hitter Bill Kile, the Yanks are hitting a division best .292 team avg. They also lead the division in HR and runs scored, led by Jack Flynt, the AL's leading run producer. Their lineup should be enough to get them into the playoffs, either winning the East pennant or as the wildcard.
Pitcher Spotlight: SP Ben Vineyard (TOR)
- Vineyard's arm is the main reason for the Blue Jays lead at the break. The 24yo ace ties for the league lead in wins and has dominated opposing hitters, leading the AL in Whip & Opp Avg. He also ranks 2nd in ERA & K's, and is one of the front runners for the AL Cy Young.
Hitter Spotlight: C Bill Kile (NYY)
- Kile hit an impressive .349 last year, this year he is shattering that as he flirts with the magical .400 number. with over 0.25 lead over the player with the 2nd best avg, Bill has clearly been the best contact hitter in the league. Mixing in some nice power (15 hr) and run production (51 rbi), Kile is the game's offensive best catcher this year by far.
Rookie Spotlight: SP Jack Bracken (BOS)
- Thought to be their #3 or 4 pitcher in the pre-season, Bracken has emerged as Boston's ace so far this year. He leads his team in both wins and era, which is saying alot when you factor in they have last year's Cy Young winner in Karl Holland. He also leads all MLB rookies in era and whip and all AL rookie pitchers in Vorp & IP while tied for the most wins.

Cleveland Indians 31 44 .413 17.0 31-44
Kansas City Royals 30 45 .400 18.0 31-44
Team Spotlight: Detroit Tigers
- With the AL's best record and the largest lead of any of the division winners, Detroit has easily been the class of the AL Central this year. Led by a dominant 1-2 punch at the top of rotation in Clement and Alleman, Detroit has the best staff in the Central. Add in the AL's highest scoring offense, and you have the type of team capable of winning it all.
Pitcher Spotlight: SP Erubiel Clemente (DET)
- Clement was one of the best pitcher's in the AL last year, leading the league in wins, and he's well on his way to doing that again. With the majors best ERA & Vorp, Erubiel is tied for the AL lead in winsand 2nd in strikeouts to teammate Alleman. If the season ended now, he would be probably edge out his 2 other leading Cy Young candidates and was awarded the starting nod for the AL All-Star team.
Hitter Spotlight: SS Jack "Zoom Zoom" McCowan (CLE)
- Despite being 38yo, Cleveland signed McCowan away from Philly in the off-season, giving him a 2 yr deal. He has rewarded them as being the AL's best SS thru the 1st half of the season. He ranks on the AL's leaderboard in most offensive categories including Avg, OPS & Vorp, and as a SS, a position not usually known for it's offensive production.
Rookie Spotlight: SP Bob Lawson (CLE)
- Despite being a 6th rd pick, Lawson has been one of the Indians' top pitchers all year as their #4 starter. Tied for rookie lead in wins and GS he has been very effective in his 1st season for Cleveland, even though he sports rather high 4.22 era & 1.61 whip.

Texas Rangers 44 31 .587 - 40-35

Oakland Athletics 37 38 .493 7.0 35-40
Seattle Mariners 27 48 .360 17.0 29-46
Team Spotlight: Texas Rangers
- Texas might be the AL's most balanced team. 4 of their 5 starting pitchers have 8 wins or more, they have the AL's best closer, and their lineup features 5 players hitting over .275 and 6 players with double digits in HRs. These stats give them the nod to hold on in the tight AL West, because with some many players contributing, slumps won't effect them as much as the other teams in the West.
Pitcher Spotlight: CL Jeremy "Ignitor" Millsap (TEX)
- Millsap was the AL's best closer at the midway point last year with Minnesota, and signing with a new team hasn't changed much as he is still the best closer in the AL, this time for Texas. He leads all AL closers in saves, era, opp avg & whip and is looking for an extension with Texas as he only is signed to a 1 yr deal.
Hitter Spotlight: 2b John Balcorta (ANA)
- The reigning AL MVP isn't producing the same numbers as last year, but still remains one of the best hitters in the AL thru the 1st half. His avg is up from last year at .344, but his power and RBIs are down at the midway point. He is still on pace for a 30/30 season, but will need to pick up the power in order to dublicate last year's 40/40 campaign.
Rookie Spotlight: RF Socks Seybold (SEA)
- Simply put, Seybold is the best rookie in the majors. He's not hitting for much power with only 2 HR, but he leads all MLB rookies in just about every other category and is 2nd in the all of the AL in Avg at .366.

Philadelphia Phillies 31 44 .413 21.0 30-45
Washington Nationals 31 44 .413 21.0 34-41
Team Spotlight: Atlanta Braves
- The greatest lineup in the short history of my baseball universe is what is powering the defending champion Braves to the best record in the MLB. Led by the sick 1-2 of George Boutte & Dave DeWarrenne, Atlanta has a large lead over any other NL team in runs scored and also is the NL leader in team Avg, OPS & HR. Even though they might be 1-2 in MVP voting, they have a great supporting case as 6 of their 8 regulars are hitting over .300 & 5 of the 8 have over 40 RBI.
Pitcher Spotlight: CL Jose "Dawg" Arellanos (FLO)
- The 2 time All-Star signed with the Marlins from the Dodgers in the off-season, but still remains one of the NL's best closers. Anchoring the NL East's best pitching staff, Dawg has coverted 23 of 24 saves this year with a NL closer's best 1.09 era while averaging over 1 k per inning.
Hitter Spotlight: 2b George Boutte (ATL)
- Atlanta signed Boutte to the richest deal in MLB history this off-season, and at the midway point, it looks like a bargain. For the 2nd straight year, the NL has a triple crown contender at the break, with Boutte leading the league in HR, RBI, Runs and Vorp and is only .004 behind the league leader in Batting Avg. His signing, and subsequent season, makes the Braves the favorite to win it all for the 2nd straight year.
Rookie Spotlight: SP Fred Mitchell (NYM)
- Leading all NL pitchers and all MLB rookies in wins, the 22nd pick in the draft has made an immediate impact for the Mets. Despite an unimpressive 37 k/36 bb ratio, Mitchell is 11-4 with a very respectable 3.41 era in his 1st MLB season.

St. Louis Cardinals 33 42 .440 6.0 31-44
Chicago (N) Cubs 30 45 .400 9.0 29-46
Team Spotlight: Milwaukee Brewers
- In a division in qhich .500 might win it, Milwaukee gets the nod simply due to having the 2 best players in the division. CF Rafael Chafuen is the NL leader in hits & Avg and 39 yo LF Eric Eckerman was an NL MVP nominee last year, and looks to be the same again this year, ranking in the top 5 in the NL in Avg, OPS, SB & Vorp. With those 2 leading the way, the Brewers should have enough to win in the below avg Central.
Pitcher Spotlight: SP Hidemichi Mori (HOU)
- Mori went 14-17 last year despite a solid 3.28 era...this year he has lowered that to 2.53 and is one of the best pitcher in the NL. Ranking among the league leaders in wins, ERA, IP, strikeouts, whip and Vorp, the 27 yo out of Japan has really found his A game and is one of the best in baseball.
Hitter Spotlight: RF Eric Eckerman (MIL)
- For the 2nd year in a row, Eckerman is the best hitter in the NL Central, despite being ancient in baseball terms as he nears 40. While the power seems to be going, he is on pace to match the rest of last year's near MVP season (.361, 51 hr, 127 rbi, 144 runs, 41 sb)
Rookie Spotlight: SP Whitey Guese (MIL)
- Despite a sub-.500 record at 5-7, Whitey leads all NL rookies with a solid 3.26 era while leading all of the NL with 18 gs & 138.0 ip. The 15th overall pick in last year's draft has jumped to the top of Milwaukee's rotation as their #1 starter, and at 29 yo is entering his prime. The wins will come if he keeps pitching as solid as he's been.

Colorado Rockies 36 39 .480 6.0 37-38
San Diego Padres 24 51 .320 18.0 30-45
Team Spotlight: Arizona Diamondbacks
- The hottest team in baseball over the past 3 weeks has been the Diamondbacks, going 9-1 over their last 10 and 14-4 since June 1st, Arizona has made up a 5 game lead and pulled even with SF at the break. Hitting is again the strength of the D-Backs as they are led by reigning NL MVP Incendio Ondarza, 2b All-Star Love and surprise All-star snub 1b Sexto Lopez.
Pitcher Spotlight: SP Porfiro "Spitfire" Moncivaiz (SF)
- At only 24 yo, the Dominican Spitfire is already a 2 time All-star and argueably the best pitcher in baseball since it's inception. Coming off a 19-5, 2.77 era season , Moncivaiz is back at it, ranking 2nd in the NL in ERA and Wins, leading in Vorp and among the leaders in IP, Whip & K's. The future is bright for Porfiro and the Giants.
Hitter Spotlight: 3B Incendio "Spiderman" Ondarza (ARI)
- As the controversial NL MVP last year, Ondarza knew he was going to be watched closely this year, and he hasn't disappointed. Although he is not matching last years numbers, he remains one of the most feared power hitters in baseball and if not for the insane season George Boutte is having, he would lead the NL in both HR & RBI. He wanted to prove last year he was the deserving MVP winner, and thru the 1st half, he certainly has.
Rookie Spotlight: SP Tom "Long Tom" Hughes (COL)
- Slim picking for a rookie spotlight player in the NL West, so Hughes gets the nod despite a very ordinary 5-4 record with a 3.48 era. As a 4th rd pick of the Rockies, he wasn't expected to make the big league team this year, so he has far exceeded expectations early on. The one thing he is doing well is putting away hitters and he leads all MLB rookies in strikeouts, but still only has 68 thru 101.0 ip.
