PENNANT RACES:
Only the Central Division was a forgone conclusion in the Washington League, as Boise ran away with the division in the 2nd half, going 31-21 after the All-Star break and going from a 2 game lead to coasting to the finish with a 11 game cushion.
In both the East & the West we had multiple teams vieing for playoff spots. The East was especially close and came down to the last games of the season. Idaho Falls and Missoula played each other in the afternoon and with Idaho winning 6-1, they needed help from Orem, the worst team in the league, to defeat Ogden. Nothing happening there, with Ogden jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd and winning the game, and division, 4-2.
The West also had 4 teams alive heading into the final weekend, but series losses by Aberdeen and Brooklyn to Jupiter and Yakima elimated them. With Vancouver winning the 1st 2 in a set vs. Eugene, and Everett also taking the 1st 2 vs Tri City, the division race was over before the final games, but Everett got the nice reward of clinching the Wild Card spot.

PENNANT RACES:
Much like the Washington league, the LL had many close races that weren't decided to the final days of the season. Only the Central was decided early as Hickory clinched with a few games left, but it looks closer as they dropped their last 4 of the season. However Delmarva and Hagerstown both were still alive for the Wildcard so they still had something to play for.
In the West, Lakewood, Asheville and Lake County were battling all year long, often trading the division lead for games at a time. However, in the end, the Blueclaws were able to clinch with a season ending series sweep of West Virginia.
Auburn and Batavia were battling for the East pennant and also for the wildcard spots. At the end, they both were happy. Auburn beat Batavia 2 out of 3 to close out the year giving them the division, and Batavia sent Thank You baskets of fruits and chocolate to division mates Husdon Valley and Williamsport, both took 2 out of 3 from the other teams in the wildcard hunt.
1900 PLAYOFFS
WILDCARD:
In the Washington League, both series went the distance as Vancouver beat division mate Everett 2-1 and Ogden upset Boise 2-1 to move on to the League Championship to face the Canadians.
The Lincoln league was a little less dramatic as the East reigned supreme with both Auburn and Batavia sweeping their series vs. Lakewood & Hickory respectively.
LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
The upsets continued for both Ogden and Batavia as both teams won their best of 5 series 3-0 despite being the underdog and road teams. However the games themselves were quite different. Ogden beat Vancouver in 1 run games all 3 times, including a 11 inning 2-1 classic in game 2 inwhich team offensive leader LF Fernando Perez hit a GW homer, and susequently was named series MVP. Batavia did it with all blowouts over the Doubledays, outscoring them 17-4 in the series. CF Luis Herradon was named series MVP as he drove in 8 of the team's 17 runs in the series, including 2 homeruns, 1 being a grand salami.
ROOKIE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
Simply a classic. The teams traded games for the entire series, winning, losing, winning, losing, etc. In the end, the team with the worst record of all 8 playoff teams was crowned the champs and the Ogden Raptors won the first Rookie League Championship trophy on the road. Even game 7 was a thriller with the score tied 2-2 after 7 innings. Ogden would go on to score 2 in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to take the clincher 5-2. In the feel good story of the playoffs, SP Alanzo Belloso won the Championship MVP. You might remember him as being the WL East's Spotlight pitcher at the midway point. Injuries really curtailed his 2nd half, but he got healthy a week before the playoffs started and in the Championship he went 2-0 in 2 GS, pitching 15 innings and only giving up 3 runs. He also threw a CG shutout in game 1 and won game 5 despite giving up 3 runs in 6 innings of work.

AWARD WINNERS
WASHINGTON LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - LF Armando Capois (Boise Hawks)
- 18yo / USA - IRL MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 84 g - 350 ab - .349 avg - 12 hr - 49 rbi - 46 r - 3 sb - .913 ops
- Career Stats: 84 g - 350 ab - .349 avg - 12 hr - 49 rbi - 46 r - 3 sb - .913 ops (minors)
43 g - 133 ab - .263 avg - 3 hr - 20 rbi - 16 r - 2 sb - .657 ops (majors)
- Overview: Armando led all of the IRL in batting avg & vorp and led the WL in ops, slugging %, and runs created despite being called up to the majors with 3 weeks to go in the IRL season. While he was in the rookie league, he led his Boise team to the 2nd best record in the Washington League and they were able to clinch the division title soon after he was called up. He had an amazing 2nd half of the year, as he wasn't leading any category at the midway point. At only 18 yo, he is yet to reach his full potential, but still figures to be the everyday LF for the Boston Red Sox next season.
CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Jeronimo Precichi (Billings Mustangs)
- 17yo / USA - IRL CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 23 g - 23 gs - 14-6 rec - 0 sv - 2.28 era - 193.0 ip - 80 bb - 118 k - 1.13 whip
- Career Stats: 23 g - 23 gs - 14-6 rec - 0 sv - 2.28 era - 193.0 ip - 80 bb - 118 k - 1.13 whip (minors)
- Overview: Despite playing for a team that finished 10 games below .500, Precichi tied for the WL lead in wins, and contributed to winning 1/3 of all his team's games on the season. Thought around the IRL is the reason why Jerenimo won the award was because the more deserving nominees all were promoted to the majors, where as he spent the entire season in the rookie league. Nevertheless, he was the best pitcher in the league after the All-Star break, making 10 of his starts in July/August and going 8-1 with a 0.86 era over those 10 games. This 17 yo isn't a sure bet to make the Baltimore Orioles roster next year, so he might have a chance to defend his title.

LINCOLN LEAGUE
MVP AWARD - 2b Steve Reid (West Virginia Power)
- 20yo / USA - IRL MVP Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 84 g - 318 ab - .336 avg - 15 hr - 37 rbi - 57 r - 2 sb - .947 ops
- Career Stats: 84 g - 318 ab - .336 avg - 15 hr - 37 rbi - 57 r - 2 sb - .947 ops (minors)
52 g - 210 ab - .367 avg - 5 hr - 23 rbi - 36 r - 2 sb - .910 ops (majors)
- Overview: Much like Capois in the WL, Reid won the award despite being promoted with a few weeks to go in the IRL season. Even so, he still led all of the IRL in Slugging, OPS and Runs Created and led the Lincoln League in Batting Avg & VORP. He got little help from his teammated though, as his WV Power finished in dead last in their division. Even though Reid is only 20 yo, he actually put up better numbers in his promotion to the Cardinals and will surely be their starting 2b next year, as well as an All-Star candidate in his 1st full year. With ratins of 16/20 in contact, 11/20 in power and 10/20, 8/20 in eye/discipline, and not even reaching his full potential, Reid looks like he is a star in the making.
CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Bill Lane (Hickory Crawdads)
- 26yo / USA - IRL CY YOUNG Awards: 1
- Season Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 20-8 rec - 0 sv - 2.15 era - 272.0 ip - 54 bb - 236 k - 0.96 whip
- Career Stats: 35 g - 35 gs - 20-8 rec - 0 sv - 2.15 era - 272.0 ip - 54 bb - 236 k - 0.96 whip (minors)
- Overview: At 26yo, Lane is far from a hotshot prospect, and never got the call up to Toronto this season, which allowed him to put up the best stats, by far, of any pitcher in the IRL. Leading the entire league in Wins, GS, IP, VORP & Strikeouts, Lane was the easy choice as the LL Cy Young winner. His ratings are not quite that of a MLB pitcher, and with him being a free agent this off-season, there is a chance he might sign on with the Japan or Mexico league. If not, he should be back dominating in the IRL.
