"Pitch" means "throw the ball to the plate". It doesn't mean "groove it down the middle" (although it'd be cool if that was an option - you could simulate Crash Davis and stuff). In today's game, not even Lou Piniella can tell a guy to throw strikes and expect him to follow orders 100% of the time. Similarly, all "swing away" means is that you're letting the batter take his bat off his shoulder and swing *if he sees a pitch he wants to hit*. Some guys are going to hack at everything a la Vlad Guerrero, some are going to wait for their pitch a la Jim Thome. It's just the way baseball goes.
