You can read the readme file for all the changes made to Lahman to make our DB.
Your problem though is not a DB issue. Ratings are based on player's statistical record. If a young, active player is becoming a star in 2006, that isn't reflected in his stats through 2005, so his ratings don't reflect that fact. Pujols is a stud because his stats make him so. If a rookie had a great 2005, then his ratings will reflect that. But, the DB is not a crystal ball nor is OOTP. The game takes information to simulate baseball outcomes. If what is fed to it is an average players stats, then you should expect average results. The talent ratings are just based on what a player did for his career or remaining career at time of import, so you should see progression for good players and digression for those whose careers were on decline...with a little randomness thrown in, which is what makes the game great.
