More big news has come out of New York this offseason than the past 10 years combined. In another shocking move, the Yankees were able to convince the top starting pitcher free agent Vito Pelayo to a 4 year $100 million contract. "I loved the idea of getting a chance to play in a market like New York and I'm convinced that GM Chris Chatham will have the ability to put together a winning team and do it soon," commented Pelayo from his home in Venezuela. "To be honest, going into this offseason Pelayo wasn't originally even on our radar. However, with the recent moves we made, I felt that we could start to make moves to start getting better this year. We decided that Yankee fans have waited too long already for a winning team. We wanted to be able to start competing this year." Pelayo was 20-8 with a 2.38 ERA last season and has a career record of 92-55 with a 2.99 ERA.

Along with the signing of Pelayo, the Yankees also announced that they have claimed 1B Ray Ramsdell off of waivers from the Chicago Cubs. Ramsdell is a 6 time all-star but had a bit of an off year hitting just 0.256 with 17 HRs in 578 at-bats. He was placed on the 40-man roster and assigned to the active roster.

Around the league, the Mets signed former Devil Ray SP Bob Kneppel to a 2 year deal worth $6.63 million per year. Kneppel has a career mark of 135-128 with a 3.61 ERA. Oakland signed veteran C Michael Ellis to a 2 year deal worth $5.767 million per year. Ellis is only a career 0.219 hitter.
