The Yankees jump and make a big splash. The Yankees dipped deep into their pockets and came out with wads of cash as on Saturday, 2/8, they announced the signing of
SP Hoshiko Kyushichi to a 5 year deal worth $14 million per year. As if that weren't enough, during the press conference announcing introducing Kyshichi, they also announced the signing of
3B Paul Goodman to a 4 year deal worth $12.5 million per year. After the press conference, GM Chris Chatham put out a press release stating, "These two guys are fully committed to playing for a World Champion Yankee team. They understand that these next couple of years will be difficult, but they feel that in the end they can become a part of something great. I spent a lot of time talking to these two and sharing my vision with them. I am glad that they are eager to take a part in that vision."
The Yankees also announced that they have claimed
CL Ryan Lichtenstein from the Pittsburgh Pirates and
SP Cristobal Munoz from the Texas Rangers. Both players were placed on waivers to be removed from their team's respective 40-man rosters and were placed on the 40-man roster of the Yankees and optioned to the minor leagues.
In other news around the league,
SP Nathaniel Ortega signed with the Cleveland Indians. The deal is reportedly worth around $39.5 million over the next three years. The 35 year old veteran is 97-79 with a 3.71 ERA over his 9 year career. The man who was Mr. 9th inning for the Anaheim Angels for the past 12 years is now a Milwaukee Brewer.
CL Linwood Shevlin signed a deal worth a whopping $19.36 million per year for the next three years to be the new closer for the Brew Crew. The 33 year old Shevlin is second amongst active career leaders with 347 saves. He has posted an ERA of just 2.09 through 802.2 innings of work. The Devil Rays made their first signing, despite not yet having a new GM in place, inking
SS Douglas Howell to a four year deal worth $11.9 million per year. Howell is a gold glove caliber shortstop with a .254 career BA and 289 career HRs. The money continued to fly as Arizona signed
RF James Handy to a deal worth $10.7 million a year for the next three years. Another outfielder was off the market when the Angels signed 35 year old
LF James Beck to a three year $22 million contract. To close it off, the Cubs overpaid for yet another outfielder signing 30 year old
Melvin Orosco to three years and $27 million. Of the three, Beck has the highest career batting average, hitting an amazing 0.255 over 3100 career at-bats.
