While nobody may have been willing to spend the money to claim him, you must remember if you are taken in the Rule V draft you have to spend the entire season on the 25-man roster or the disabled list, either way hindering development. That may have been what people were scared off of, since you said it was a few years ago he was what, just entering Double-A or something like that?

While you are correct about the roster stipulation, remember this is a guy who was once considered a monster out of LSU (I believe he had Boras as his agent in 1997 when he was drafted - first round, by the way). By the time he was exposed in the Rule 5 draft, he already had both a full AA and a full AAA season under his belt (as well as some time lingering in A ball prior to those two years). Looking at that track record, surely somebody could have been brazen and taken him while hoping he'd eventually develop into what he originally was projected to be (a great hitter).
