1910 C.S. Regular Season Recap

from the Confederate Baseball Weekly, October 10, 1910:

POP LLOYD HAS SEASON FOR THE AGES - Much has been made in the past about the superlatives skills of Miami shortstop John Henry Lloyd. Though just 26 years of age, the mature play of this superb player has earned him the nickname "Pop" - and he has once again topped himself in 1910. Pop's tremendous season saw him win the first-ever Confederate Triple Crown. Lloyd hit .360 (best in all of baseball, including our northerly cousins), and hit an astounding 28 homeruns while driving in 103 runs - all easily the best in all of Confederate baseball. Lloyd outhomered every team in ALL of baseball except Philadelphia (28), Atlanta (29), Santo Domingo (35) and Leesburg (41). An amazing performance from an amazing player.

DIXIE THRUSH LEADS LOUISVILLE TO PENNANT - It was just another year at the office for the Dixie Thrush, Sammy Strang. Strang his .325 - just like he did in 1909 - to lead the Gears and also scored 110 runs, the tops in Confederate baseball. Teaming with young Napoleon Wilde, who led the team in runs batted in, Strang and the Gears will be a tough matchup in the postseason for Pop Lloyd and the Superbas.

ROOKIE WILLIAMS IS FAR AND AWAY BEST MOUNDSMAN IN 1910 - "Smokey Joe" Williams is, without a doubt, the winner of the top rookie honors for 1910. He's also inarguably the best pitcher in Confederate - and possibly ALL of - baseball. All the tall right-hander did in his first pro season: 27-10 record, 1.59 earned run average, and 347 strikeouts in 367-plus innings. He held opponents to a .191 average and allowed less than a baserunner per inning. A fantastic season for the 25-year-old newcomer.
