Here is a brief sample of cities.txt information. The format is city, population, nation code, province or state, geographical coordinate, geographical coordinate.
There are more than 90,000 listed cities. Population seems drawn on the most current data.
It is very easy to change data. I have set up leagues set up in fictional worlds where Texas was an independant nation. After creating Texas in nations.txt, I opened cities.txt and sorted by state. I changed the nation from 206 to the new number, 227. I then used MS-Paint, made a Texas flag, placed it in the proper spot, and I was done. For a bigger challenge, I made a world with the Confederate States of America. I was able to get cities.txt altered for this in less than a minute using copy / paste using MS-Excel 2003.
I think it would be a small challenge to edit cities.txt to reflect a specific year. A 1987 version of cities.txt would require splitting Germany up and altering all of the former Soviet republics a new nation number.
I only have a vague memory of market size information. In a league set up in 1961 Portugal, market size seemed accurate for the cities and towns used. I would have to get back to you with specifics.
