I do the fictional/historical thing so it's really important for me to be able to change things around. It's also useful if you prefer a certain style of baseball. For example, I'm a big fan of the way you could play wildly different strategies in the 70s and 80s and have engineered things so that the game creates 1985-looking league totals. Conversely, if you like the dead ball era, this is the way to go.
You can figure out the league totals just using a spreadsheet or, if you prefer, there's a really good utility for this too. If you're using the DIPS engine, though, you really really are going to want to set things up to run things through replay for a few seasons because it's flat-out not going to come out right the first time. Also, since the game figures things out in reverse, some extreme set-ups (example: 1930) will blow up the game.
