Depends on what period you're looking at and how you define "superior." From 1994-1996 a balanced schedule was used in each league, making the divisional alignments arbitrary and effectively meaningless.
1997-2000 saw interleague play added which unbalanced the schedules somewhat, but divisional play was still a small component of the season. It's not until 2001 when divisional play was given a significant boost in the percentage of total games played.
