1909 World Series

Game 1-10/10/09: Pirates-2 Bronchos-5

The Bronchos quickly showed their detractors that they would not roll over and die for the Pirates, taking Game 1 and playing solid ball throughout. They quickly took a 1-0 lead on Art Fromme when Don Ayers drove in Art Devlin, and from there, it was easy as pie for Cleveland. Jimmy Dygert held the hard hitting Pirates to just five hits, and their two runs came in the eighth and ninth innings, after the Bronchos had already taken a 5-0 lead.

Game 2-10/11/09: Pirates-2 Bronchos-1 (17 Innings)

In one of the greatest games in World Series history, the Pirates outdueled the Bronchos in 17 grueling innings. With Rube Waddell on the mound, Pittsburgh thought they would have an easy road to victory, but Hooks Wiltse matched the Pirates' ace pitch for pitch, and inning for inning. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the 4th behind back to back to back singles from Ginger Beaumont, Bris Lord and Dave Brain. The Bronchos answered back quickly in the bottom of the 5th, scoring their only run on a Peaches Graham single that scored Steve Evans.

From there on, it was nothing but goose eggs for hours as both pitchers settled into an amazing groove. Waddell went 8 innings, Wiltse 10, and the Pirates survived four errors in the field. By the time the game reached the 15th inning, both teams seemed physically and mentally exhausted, and many were afraid that the game would be called due to darkness. However, both teams insisted on finishing, so the game went on. The Pirates had a chance to take the lead in the 16th with two on and only one out, but Kitty Bransfield and Claude Ritchey could not get the job done. In the 17th, with Cleveland using just their fourth pitcher, the Pirates strung together a double from Art Hoelskoetter, a sacrifice from Ted Easterly and a sacrifice fly from Honus Wagner to finally take a 2-1 lead. The Bronchos were horribly exhausted, but when Peaches Graham tripled with two outs, it seemed the game may continue. However, Deacon Phillippe forced Harl Maggert to ground out, and the longest game in World Series history came to a close.

Game 3-10/13/09: Bronchos-1 Pirates-8

When the Bronchos got off the train in Pittsburgh following the 17 inning Game 2 marathon, they looked haggard, and their play in Game 3 certainly made many believe they were still tired from the previous game. The Pirates never trailed, and smacked out 9 hits, inlcuding a three for three day with 4 runs batted in for Bris Lord. Chief Bender gave the Pirates' tired bullpen an extra day off, outdueling Johnny Lush in pitching a complete game.

Game 4-10/14/09: Bronchos-1 Pirates-3

Cleveland's already meager offense continued to struggle against Pittsburgh's pitching, as they scored just their third run in three games, this time facing Game 1 loser Art Fromme. Fromme was back to his usual self this time out, pitching a three hit, seven strikeout gem of a game. Pittsburgh's offense was again led by Bris Lord, who went 2 for 4 and added another RBI to his postseason total. All Cleveland could do now was hope that they could get the series sent back to their home by winning Game 5

W: Art Fromme L: Jimmy Dygert

Game 5-10/15/09: Bronchos-2 Pirates-4

With Rube Waddell and Hooks Wiltse again on the hill for their respective teams, Game 5 was one of the most highly anticipated games in recent memory. However, the Pirates jumped on Wiltse early this time around, knocking him for two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cleveland got one of the runs back in the 3rd when Don Ayers singled home Peaches Graham, but when Ginger Beaumont and Bris Lord drove in two more in the bottom of the 4th, the game was all but over. Waddell struck out 12 and walked only 2 in a complete game effort, and when Ayers grounded out to third, the Pirates had secured their fourth World Series championship in six years, making them an easy choice for Team of the Decade.

Series MVP: Bris Lord, RF-. 550, 6 RBI, 11 Hits

1909 World Series Champions: Pittsburgh Pirates
