from the Confederate Baseball Weekly, June 3, 1908:
MIAMI'S LLOYD HAVING SEASON OF A LIFETIME - John Henry Lloyd, star shortstop of Pop Watkins' Miami Superbas, is having himself a year to be remembered. In the 38 games he has played so far this season, Lloyd has failed to get a hit just five times, and has had 20 games with two or more safeties, including a four-for-four on May 6 against New Orleans.
Asked for a reason for his success, the ever-positive Lloyd said, "I've just been seeing the ball well and not trying to overswing. Just get the bat on the ball and try to find a hole. It's a big field and only eight guys are covering it - you just need to find some of that open pasture."
No one has ever found the open pasture as frequently as Lloyd has this season. Through the games of June 1, John Henry has recorded a startling .436 average, a good fifty points higher than anyone else - in either the Confederate or U.S. leagues.
Can he keep it up? "Oh, I don't know about that," he says with a grin. "But I'll certainly do my best. You can't win if you don't score and you can't score - usually - without hitting that ball well, so my teams and I will just continue to try to do our jobs and if I hit over .400, it'll be worth it as long as the team wins."
