Figured it out finally.

I had tried to start a season in January, which the game allows. However, the game isn't smart enough to reschedule the offseason draft, free agent signings, etc. Thus, the game crashes because "Joe Smith" can't be playing a game on Jan. 15 when he is supposed to be in the free agent draft on the same day.

You need to start seasons 4/1 or after, otherwise you may run into what happened to me.
