It might also help to reduce the strategy of complete rebuilds and losing to acquire top draft picks. One of the things I don't like about online leagues is that if your not a contender it's usually better to be a bottom feeder than it is to try and be competitive. There isn't much incentive to be a .500-.540 team because while your doing that there are teams below you raking in the top prospects who will soon be beating your ass. But if being .500 saves your job, or your owner's orders are to be sure to make a profit while winning x number of games... things would be different. Don't meet your owner's expectations and you might find yourself managing a minor league team .

The idea of working your way up through the minors is just icing on the cake.
