It is game 7 of the Liberty League Championship Series. The San Antonio Gunslingers are hosting the Richmond Cannons with a trip to the USBA Championship on the line. This is the 16th USBA season and amazingly it is San Antonio's first ever playoff appearance. The Richmond Cannons won the championship back in the league's 4th season, but until this season they had missed the playoffs 6 straight times. Both teams were victorious in the first round.
Fast forward to the final game of the series. Paced by 2 homers from catcher
Lance Laramie, Richmond leads 4 - 1 after 6 innings. San Antonio gets one back in the bottom of the 7th, but heading into the bottom of 9th they still trail by 2 runs. Closer
Eddiejoe Mack is on the mound. In his last 20 appearances, Mack has only been scored on twice, giving up a total of three runs. After a hit batsmen, a single and a couple of outs, there are runners on second and third with 2 out. Left fielder
L.J. Harwell hits a single to score both runs, tie the game and put the Richmond celebration on hold. Fortunately for Richmond, Mack gets the final out of the inning to force extra innings.
In the 10th inning, San Antonio threatens, but neither team scores. In the top of the 11th with only 1 out, Richmond's
Charles Lockwood triples, driving in two runs. Although Richmond could not cash in Lockwood, something that would prove costly.
In the bottom half, thanks to a couple walks and another hit batsmen, San Antonio manages to score two runs and tie the game with just one hit. For the second time in the game, with their playoff lives on the line, San Antonio has come back from a 2-run deficit.
Richmond goes in order in the top of the 12th. In the bottom half San Antonio manages to get men on first and third with only one out.
Robert Campbell, an outfielder who only had 15 at-bats and 1 RBI during the season is up to bat. He hits a routine double play ball to Richmond's rookie shortstop,
Carlos Valverde. Valverde promptly boots the ball which allows the winning run to score. It will be awhile before the rookie can get the goat horns off of his head.
The Richmond fans are crying into their beer after 2 hits batsmen, 4 walks and an error directly caused them to blow two leads and eventually the game.
Not only that, but they were up 3 games to 1 in the series and in game six they had the lead after 6 innings, only to eventually lose in the 11th inning. It just wasn't meant to be.
It wasn't the best played game ever in the USBA, but it was one of the most exciting ones.
In their first ever playoff appearance, San Antonio has now made it to the finals and they have a date with the New York Gothams, who had the USBA's best regular season record.
Box Score, San Antonio vs Richmond, Game 7.
