VANCOUVER - A very entertaining night of boxing tonight was topped by a close bout between top ten fighters Chet Shandel and McHenry Johnson. Shandel was ahead on all cards going into round twelve, when Johnson came out of nowhere to drop Shandel for a 9 count. From that point on, the crowd hung on every tick of the clock as Shandel staggered away from a weary but desperate Johnson. When the bell tolled ending the match, the crowd roared its approval and appreciate for the effort by both fighters. Shandel wins by majority decision.
The undercard featured an amazing bout between James "Captain" Dalton and undefeated slugger Peter Courtney. This was a highly anticipated match, and it did not disappoint, featuring no less than 7 knockdowns - 3 by Courtney and 4 by Dalton. The fight seesawed, and even as it looked like one fighter had taken control, the other would come back with a vengence. Round 1, Dalton knocks Courtney down in the first minute of the match. Courtney weathers the storm. Rounds 2-6, Courtney is the aggressor, putting the Captain in jeopardy time and again. Finally, in round 7, a wild right by Courtney catches Dalton flush and he drops for a 7 count. In round 8, Courtney headhunts Dalton, looking to end the match. Near the end of the round, a careless Courtney finds himself on the receiving end of a powerful Dalton hook, and he hits the canvas for a 2 count. Courtney is back in control in round 9, and a flurry of blows drops Dalton mid round for a 4 count. The Captain is barely upright when a wicked uppercut by Courtney sends him back to the canvas. Somehow, Dalton keeps his feet to last the round, but he doesn't look good going into round 10. Courtney builds a large lead in round 10, pounding Dalton at every turn in an attempt to end the match. Then, midway through round 10, Courtney walks into a Dalton right cross and drops like a rock. He's up by the count of 6, but looks badly hurt. Dalton chases a groggy Courtney and a left cross sends him to the ground again, this time for the 4 count. With over a minute left in the round, Courtney had an uphill battle just lasting the round, as one more knockdown would end the match. Dalton recognized this, headhunting a backpeddling foe. Somehow, Courtney lasts the round. By this point, both fighters are pretty much punched out. The last two rounds featured two warriors in a test of endurance. At the final bell, both Dalton and Courtney raised weary arms in victory to the loud applause of an appreciative audience. The fight cards were very close, as was expected given the tremendous effort exhibited by each fighter. As it turned out, Peter Courtney's narrow wins in the 11th and 12th rounds gave him the UD victory, 111 to 109 on each judge's scorecard.
In other results, Joe Goddard fought to a tough win over Toxie Hall, and Denver Ed Smith and Steve Taylor fight to a draw. Smith was ahead on all cards until an 8th round knockdown by Taylor earned him a draw.
